Understanding the healthcare communication needs of pediatric patients through the My CHATT tool: A pilot study

ABSTRACTBackground: Communication is considered a key indicator for high-quality patient- and family-centered healthcare. However, few studies have assessed pediatric preferences for healthcare communication. This pilot study aimed to increase the understanding of pediatric communication preferences, and develop a patient- and family-informed clinical tool (i.e. My CHATT) that can be quickly disseminated and easily implemented.Methods: Qualitative thematic methods via focus group and survey research were employed. Common themes discussed during separate patient (N = 4; ages 16–22) and parent (N = 5) focus groups guided the development of My CHATT. Healthcare providers (n = 9) also completed a 10-minute interview and questionnaire to aid in the development of this tool.Results: Thematic analysis revealed that patients strongly desired to be involved in communication, but stated that providers and parents rarely engaged in direct communication with them.
