The chromosomes of the kagu (Rhynochetos jubatus)

1993
SUMMARYCytogenetic studies of a very rare bird, the kagu, Rhynochetos jubatus (order Gruiformes) were performed. The morphology of individual chromosomes, and G- and C-banded karyotypes are presented. The diploid number of this species was found to be 2n = 82, and the karyotype is 2SM + 78A + Z(M) + W(SM). Additionally, the karyotype of the kagu is compared with the published gruid karyotype and the karyological relationship between them discussed.
