A Survey on Energy Efficient Cellular Mobile Communication

Energy consumption in a modern cellular communication system is increasing as there is a tremendous increase in demand for high data rate coupled with Quality of Service requirements from regulators and Quality of Experience from customers. Reduction of the network energy consumption is necessary in terms of economical perspective of the operators. Among the methods, dense deployment of small cells into macro is the current research focus towards reduction of cellular wireless networks energy consumption. In this work, we have first identified existing surveys on Energy-efficient wireless communication. Then the important key parameters that are discussed are identified and ranked based on frequency of occurrence. Here, we present a comprehensive survey on various energy consumption reduction methods, their applicability and current standings. Among various methods classification power control mechanism is presented. We noted that the design philosophy for the communication system was based on Spectral Efficiency. The energy efficiency consideration for determining transmission power in particularly for the downlink scenario was never been given due importance until recently. We hope this survey will help future researcher to identify research area,use appropriate performance parameter and energy-saving methods in green communication.
