Quality of life in coronary artery disease patients treated with nonsurgical and surgical methods

2009
Aims: Coronary artery disease patients are treated by three different methods including drugs, nonsurgical intervention using balloon catheter and coronary artery bypass graft surgery. This study was to evaluate the advantage of two CABG and nonsurgical methods by measuring quality of life of people undergone those treatments. Methods: In a descriptive-analytical study, 190 coronary artery disease patients treated with drug or surgery methods were selected by purposive sampling method from the patients’ list of one of Tehran hospitals. Then, during a structured interview, Nottingham quality of life questionnaire was completed for each patient. Data was analyzed by independent ttest and Chi square test. Results: The mean score for quality of life in patients treated with surgical and drug methods were 18.56±3.25 and 23.39±4.23, respectively. Independent t-test showed a significant difference between the two methods (p<0.05). Conclusion: Although CABG treatment is more difficult and expensive, but it is more appropriate. Informing people about this method should be more so that the necessary facilities and conditions for its application are provided.
