A shape memory device for the treatment of high myopia

2008
Abstract A device called dynamic plug in two varieties (a perforated plate and a flattened spiral spring) exploiting the shape memory effect and a method for its application in the treatment of high myopia are proposed. The application of this device allows low-traumatic correction of the shape of the posterior eye pole and strengthening of the sclera. The shape memory effect of the device permits to submit it to significant pseudoplastic deformation. In the process of implantation, the device remains in the non-functioning condition during the time needed for its placement on the eyeball posterior pole surface. Heated up to 42 °C by an external source of heat, the device restores its initial shape and creates pressure on the pathologically deformed eye surface. Experiments on laboratory animals show promising results, although further studies are required.
