Nitration of the condensation products of monoethanolamine and formaldehyde

By the1H NMR and19F methods we have shown that in an acid medium there is practically complete decomposition of the condensation product of triethanolamine and formaldehyde to a compound of a salt type containing the OCH2NCH2CH2O fragment. 2. The direction of nitration of the monoethanolamine-formaldehyde condensation products on subsequent addition of HNO3 and (CH3CO)2O is determined by the ratio of the monoethanolamine to the formaldehyde in the reaction mixture.
