Two metal stents for extensive oesophageal cancer

2016
A 64 year-old man was admitted to our Gastroenterology Unit or dysphagia and weight loss. Computerized tomography scan howed a 15 cm mass in the thoracic oesophagus, infiltratng the aorta and lymphatic structures, and liver metastasis. pper endoscopy with biopsy was performed, showing squamous ell carcinoma. Considering stenosis length, we opted to cover the lesion with 2 verlapping self-expandable metal stents (SEMS; Tae-Woong parially covered, 120/18 mm and 80/18 mm, Fig. 1). Chest X-ray with barium swallow performed the next day howed regular passage of contrast through the stent with normal astric opacification (Fig. 2); 1 week later gastroscopy confirmed egular passage of the endoscope through the stent. For three months, the patient was able to eat solid foods without ysphagia, and no complications from the double SEMS arose. The atient expired from cancer progression after four months.
