Throughput Analysis of HPO-MIMO Uplink with π-Phase Detector

2020
The power consumption at the receiver side will be dramatically increased in the millimeter-wave and massive MIMO communication systems due to the wide bandwidth and the large number of antennas adopted. In order to reduce power consumption, half phase-only MIMO (HPO-MIMO) scheme is proposed in which the base station (BS) acquires $\pi-$periodic phase measurements of the complex envelop signals. The radiofrequency (RF) circuit of the proposed scheme is designed by using the phase detector and the only one analog-to-digital converter (ADC) on each antenna. Therefore, the power consumption and cost of the proposed scheme are much lower than the classic inphase-quadrature (IQ)-structured correspondences. However, the system can no longer use the traditional MIMO capacity calculation method because it undergoes nonlinear distortion. In this paper, we derive the probability density function (PDF) of the HPO-MIMO system, and analyze the uplink throughput capacity of the proposed scheme. Numerical results validate our derived PDF, and provide the uplink’s achievable rates of HPO-MIMO.
