The invention discloses a high-power braking energy consumption device and a control method thereof. The device comprises an isolating switch module, a chopper module, a reactor module and a braking resistance module, wherein the isolating switch module is connected with the reactor module, the chopper module is connected with the reactor module, the braking resistance module is connected with the chopper module, the isolating switch module detects the voltage of a direct-current bus, the braking resistance module comprises a bipolar linkage blade switch and an absorbing resistor, the double-system conversion of the high-power braking energy consumption device is realized through the bipolar linkage blade switch according to the voltage of the direct-current bus, and the braking resistance module implements the absorption and discharge of braking energy. The reactor module comprises a filter reactor which is used for carrying out filtering on the voltage of a power grid. The chopper module is used for carrying out chopping control on the braking energy. According to the invention, the double-system conversion of the high-power braking energy consumption device is realized, and in the double-system, the device can absorb higher power fed back by currently involved domestic railway vehicles, thereby ensuring the reliable operation of power grids and vehicles.
