Measurement of residual stress by the hole-drilling method: on the direction of maximum residual stress

A rigorous and analytical criterion for determining the direction of maximum residual stress is presented. Based on this criterion, a simple intuitive method which is independent—not only of the reference coordinate, but also of the order of gage numbers—is also presented to determine the direction of maximum residual stress.
