: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning physicians that their patients who are taking any of the four protease inhibitors are at increased risk for developing hyperglycemia or diabetes. Diabetes and hyperglycemia are serious illnesses that require immediate treatment. As of May 12, 1997, eighty-three cases of diabetes/hyperglycemia had been reported to the FDA. California physicians reported two patients that developed acute pancreatitis and acute kidney failure and the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Disease reported that indinavir can cause crystal formations in the kidney and bladder.
