Directed fragmentation in mass spectrometry by introduction of functional groups: a new chapter in an old story

The fragmentation mechanisms of the ethylene ketals of variously substituted cycloalkanones have been reinvestigated by deuterium labelling and at low electron energies. The data suggest a reaction involving hydrogen migration and recyclisation of the ring-cleaved molecular ion.
