Fatal case of hepatic portal venous gas following palliative stenting and chemotherapy for occlusive advanced colorectal cancer.

2015
Dear Editor, Hepatic portal venous gas (HPVG) is a rare clinical entity [1]. The prognosis is mostly correlated with the underlying disease, and for this reason, treatment selection can vary according to its etiology. Although oncological situations represent a minority of cases of HPVG, an increasing use of multislice CT in emergency situation has also led to an increased detection of this condition in the oncological setting. However, further evidence is required to better elucidate the diagnosis of HPVG in oncological patients, its management, and the risk associated with this condition. Here, we report the case of a patient with advanced colorectal cancer and distal intestinal occlusion who received an endoluminal implant and subsequent chemotherapy.
