Improved Preparation of an Epoxy Substituted Reactive Mesogen

An improved manufacturing process was developed for the epoxy substituted mesogen 1 useful for the preparation of liquid crystalline materials. Notable features were telescoping of reactions, replacement of DCC with CDI for formation of a sensitive diaryl ester, and epoxidation using mCPBA in toluene. The process was validated on 100 kg scale.
