In vitro susceptibility of Tritrichomonas suis to four antimicrobial agents

2011
Objective To study the effects of tinidazole, metronidazole, nitazoxanide, and nystatin on Tritrichomonas suis in order to provide a basis for clinical treatment of the disease. Methods T.suis was subjected to a 24-hour susceptibility assay in vitro with four agents to determine the twenty-four-hour minimum lethal concentration of each agent.Time-kill curves of the different concentrations of drugs tested were used to clarify the effectiveness with which T.suis was killed at different times. Results All four agents inhibited or killed T.suis to a different degree.Nitazoxanide was most effective, with a 24-hour MLC of 12.50 mg/L.The 24-hour MLC for metronidazole and tinidazole was 25.00 mg/L,but tinidazole had a better time-killing curve than did metronidazole.Nystatin was the least effective. Conclusion T.suis is sensitive to tinidazole and nitazoxanide.
