Establishing a comfort environment for King Faisal University buildings using energy efficient glass windows

2017
Various private businesses in KSA have started implementing energy savings strategies long time ago. Moreover, few years ago Saudi Telecommunication Company (STC), Saudi Electric Company (SEC), and clients such as Saudi ARAMCO, and other companies have felt the great waste of energy on their monthly bills and therefore have conducted and implemented many energy saving projects. Recently many governments have set a target for the reduction of energy consumption in buildings by 30%–50% during the next five years. Such governmental commitment encourages many clients to follow similar initiatives, which may lead to have energy regulations enforced as standards. Additionally, several energy saving strategies have been adopted and implemented in the Kingdom by Mosques, commercial and residential consumers. Recently architects give importance to bring natural light into the buildings by using large Glazed type windows and roofs. This paper proposes strategy energy saving along with CO2-reduction of the King Faisal University (KFU) University buildings using energy efficient stand by diesel generator, equipment's and insulating glass in some colleges. In hot-arid regions, like kingdom regions reliance on air conditioning, which would otherwise be increased by such larger window areas can be mitigated by the use of advanced glazing type allowing the sun light into buildings, while blocking much of its heat. In addition, this paper proposes the optimal model and size of glass for savings energy and CO2 reduction. To find the optimal model and size, many various types, size and glasses have been simulated using energy savings tool. The results are validated by the international energy saving standards.
