Conclusions: This study has shown that ultrasound images taken from a high quality portable ultrasound machine, can be manipulated to give a high quality image which can then be transferred to experienced personnel to provide clinical support. The emphasis should be on lossless compression. Image manipulation via packages such as GIMP can be performed quite easily and at lowcost. Real time transmission or store and forward via email, may be challenging because of low bandwidth, however with modern memory sticks (1 GB) and devices such as IPods (40 GB), store and forward via physical transfer has the potential to be applicable to many areas.
