Recent advances in MR imaging in diagnosis and differential diagnosis of Marchiafava-Bignami disease

2019
Marchiafava-Bignami disease (MBD) is a rare disorder associated with chronic alcoholism characterized pathologically by demyelination and necrosis of the corpus callosum. Early recognition and treatment may provide a favorable outcome. Since it has no specific symptoms and signs, and may mimic several disorders, especially in its acute phase, neuroimaging is essential to confirm the diagnosis. This review highlights the pivotal role of MR imaging in the diagnosis and treatment, and differential diagnosis of MBD. Key words: Marchiafava-Bignami disease; Magnetic resonance imaging; Diagnosis; Differential diagnosis
