ATLAS end cap toroid magnets cryostat design, manufacture and integration at CERN

2004
The ATLAS experiment at LHC, CERN will utilize a large, superconducting, air-cored toroid magnet system, with a long barrel and two end cap toroids. Each end cap toroid will contain eight racetrack coils mounted as a single cold mass in a cryostat vessel of approximately 10 m diameter. This paper presents the engineering design of the cryostat: vacuum vessel, thermal radiation shields and superinsulation. The manufacture of the major components is described with reference to the key factors for operation. The delivery to CERN and integration of the main components to form the cryostat assembly is described.
