Research on the Influence of Feed Speed Variation on Turning Chatter Stability

Turning operation is one of the most widely used machining process but its machining efficiency often subjected to the chatter phenomenon. In order to suppress the chatter, this paper investigated the influence of feed speed on the chatter stability and proposed a feed speed variation method. The regenerative chatter mechanisms of two different turning operations were analyzed in detail namely orthogonal and cylindrical turning operation. The efficiency of feed speed variation was studied, the optimal control parameters for chatter suppression were proposed and the improvement of stability limit was verified by the Simulink software.
