Fatigue properties of heavy-thickness Ti6.5Al2Zr1Mo1V alloy with oscillation EBW

Abstract Electron beam welding (EBW) is manufacturing parts with heavy thickness, but the evaluation of the properties is incomplete. We employed oscillation EBW to weld Ti6.5Al2Zr1Mo1V alloy with 60 mm thickness, and observed weld microstructures, and studied the properties of high cycle fatigue. Compared with base metal at constant peak stress, fatigue strength of the joints was equivalent to that of base metals, and fatigue life was different from that of base metal. The fatigue cracks of base metal specimens originated from the surfaces, and the cracks of the joints were from the surfaces in base metal or interior welding porosities. With the decrease of the distance from welding porosity to the surface of the specimens, fatigue life of the joints gradually lowered. Fatigue life also reduced with the increase of the diameter of welding porosities, the influences of which were inferior to the location.
