Magnetic Sphincter Augmentation for Management of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

2019
The surgical management of GERD and hiatal hernia repair has evolved from an approach via laparotomy or thoracotomy, to a minimally invasive laparoscopic approach. Many surgeons have found additional benefit in the use of the surgical robot for the performance of the hiatal dissection and closure of the hiatal hernia. The surgical intervention typically involves repair of the hiatal hernia along with some form of fundoplication. Hiatal hernia repair with magnetic sphincter augmentation of the lower esophageal sphincter is an alternative approach that can be performed with the benefits of the surgical robot as well.
