Therefore, anticoagulation therapy may be avoided in selected patients. This may be particularly important for patients in whom anticoagulation is contraindicated. Future large-scale studies are needed to demonstrate whether cardioversion of atrial fibrillation is safe without anticoagulation in patients with an implanted atrial defibrillator.
