Downhole tool with fluid filled enclosure containing angled transducers

2006
An enclosure 200, which is disposed on a downhole tool (e.g. in a recess on the tool), houses one or more transducers 210, especially acoustic sources and sensors. The transducers 210 are disposed at an angle with respect to a longitudinal axis of the enclosure 200. The enclosure also contains an electronics board 230 (e.g. a PCB providing amplification, filtering etc). A fluid 290 (e.g. polymerised fluid, silicon based gel) fills the voids within the enclosure 200 and surrounds the transducers 210. The enclosure may contain a lid 260 which acts as a compensator for volume changes in the fluid 290 due to pressure and temperature variations. The enclosure may be generally rectangular in shape. The transducers may also be resistivity electrodes or pressure, gravity or light sources/sensor devices. The angle of the transducers may be varied, either electrically by activating a bank of aligned transducers in a timed or phased sequence, or mechanically by linking the transducers to an actuator rod having hinged connecting rods which allows the transducers to be rotated.
