I’m going to start in an unlikely place for a discussion on jazz and artistic research: Baruch Spinoza’s exploration of the nature of bodies and bodily relations in the second book of Ethics, a passage sometimes referred to as his “physical interlude.” Among other things, Spinoza makes the following claims:
