Enhanced cyclability and dynamic properties of P2-type Na0.59Co0.20Mn0.80O2 cathode by B-doping for sodium storage

2019
Abstract P2-type layered oxides are considered to be promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. P2-Na0.59Co0.20Mn0.75B0.05O2 (NCMB-05) cathode material has been developed by boron-doping through a solid-state reaction. The structure and the electrochemical characteristics of NCMB-05 have been systematically investigated. XRD refinement confirms that B-doping notably enhances the structural stability of the pristine oxide and expands its Na-layer spacing. In addition, NCMB-05 cathode delivers the maximum discharge capacity of 101.1 mAh g−1 at 2 C with the capacity retention rate of 95.3% after 120 cycles. The cathode achieves the discharge capacity of 135.2 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C with the capacity retention of 85.0% after 100 cycles. The strategy of B-doping will provide a valuable reference for the development of P2-type cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.
