Multimodal and Textual Analysis of Students' Digital Artifacts

2005
This paper evolves as part of a project termed the Digital Curricular Literacies (DCL) at the Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice (CRPP), National Institute of Education, Singapore. In this study we aim to analyse the students' digital artifacts that were produced by secondary school students during their work on a curriculum related task in History and Science. We will briefly describe the relevant theoretical basis for our coding scheme and the instrument that we have used to analyze the students' digital work before presenting the findings. The coding scheme will specifically look into the different text types and the aspects of multimodality in the artifacts. Seven schools participated in this study and students were paired up to collaboratively to work on a stipulated task that was based on History or Science. They were asked to search for information online and synthesize an artifact digitally using Microsoft Word or Powerpoint. They could present their work using any number and type of modes.
