In 1771, Johann Reinhold Forster published a small pamphlet entitled Flora americae septentrionalis; or a catalogue of the plants of North America. The work was published by the author and sold by "B. White, at Horace's Head, Fleet-street; and by T. Davies, in Russelstreet, Covent-garden". The work was dedicated to Daniel C. Solander. The stated purpose of the pamphlet was to augment Forster's already published A catalogue of the animals of North America (1771). Within the new publication, Forster stated that he would add "some few plants which are but lately discovered" and to provide each species with a common ("English") name.
