A new plasma source and its application in the surface modification of fabric materials

2003
Summary form only given, as follows. Summary form only given. Low temperature plasma has widely been used in modifying surface of material. In this paper, a new dielectric barrier discharge has been designed and fabricated. We are concerned with the atmosphere pressure discharge plasmas. Three different gases (air, argon, and helium) have been used for producing atmosphere pressure discharge plasma. Various plasma parameters such as plasma electron temperature and electron density are diagnosed using spectral data of plasma emission and a collisional-radiative model. Non-linear relationship between the discharge current and voltage at different discharge gaps is obtained. Two distinct plasma discharge features at different discharge conditions has also been observed. Based on the results above, the dielectric barrier discharge with a gap of 1 mm has been used for producing an uniform plasma source. This plasma source has been used for modifying the surfaces of several different fabric materials. Experimental results indicate that the performances of the treated fabric materials such as wettability and shrink resistance have obviously been improved.
