A New DMS Concept

2008
Dynamic message signs (DMS) are being used more and more to address traffic congestion problems and provider travelers with real-time information. This paper reviews past, present, and proposed new designs for DMS, seeking to identify the most affordable, practical, and usable DMS. The author reviews the purpose of these signs, different types of signs in use, cost considerations, sign interfaces, and location. The most-used current methods for building dynamic message signs (DMS) include walk-in housing with ventilation equipment; the typical configuration for above-highway DMS using LED. The author describes a new proposed DMS design that would move the heat-generating power supply and controller to the DMS cabinet at grade. This alternate method would require a lesser mechanical ventilation system and could be furnished and installed in a more efficient manner due to the DMS’s lighter weight. The author concludes that, in addition to a cost reduction in the DMS itself, a significant savings would be realized in maintenance due to the grade-level accessibility of those items that historically require ongoing maintenance.
