Ayse Erkmen Pleasant Corners

2011
The artist’s profound aim is already expressed in the title of her work Pleasant Corners, which Ayse Erkmen inserted in the city space of Graz for the Utopie und Monument I (2009) project. Her interventions contain a promise that is intentionally double-edged, because the “corners” are not “pleasant.” Erkmen conceived ten formally different plaque-like objects, each of which was painted in a bright color. These aluminum “plaques,” which are anything up to 250 centimetres long, lean unintentionally or so it seems, against streetlamps, traffic signs, bollards and trees, awakening the impression that someone has simply put them there for a moment and forgotten them.
