The inhibitory activity of pterostilbene on Candida albicans biofilms

2013
Objective To study the in vitro inhibitory activity of pterostilbene on C.albicans biofilms. Methods The effect of pterostilbene on the formation of C.albicans biofilms was measured by XTT-reduction assay. The susceptibility to pterostilbene at different stages of biofilm progression was examined. The morphological changes of C.albicans biofilms exposed to pterostilbene were observed by inverted microscopy. Results Pterostilbene apparently inhibited C.albicans biofilm formation and filamentation in a concentration-dependent manner,in which the inhibition ratio was over 90%at the dosage of 0.211 or 0.422 mmol · L~(-1).The susceptibility to pterostilbene at different stages of biofilm progression was varied. The inhibition ratio in all stages was over 80%at the dosage of 0.211 or 0.422 mmol · L~(-1) pterostilbene, while the lower concentration of pterostilbene at 0.0026,0.053 or 0.106 mmol · L~(-1) showed stronger inhibitory effect on the mature stage than the early stage of biofilm progression. Conclusion Pterostilbene exhibits a potent inhibitory activity against C. albicans biofilm formation.
