Smoking status and the effect of smoking cessation intervention in hospitalized patients with cardiocerebrovascular or diabetic diseases

2012
Objective To investigate the smoking status and the willingness to quit in hospitalized patients with cardiovascular, cerebrovascular or diabetic diseases, and to evaluate the effectiveness of a smoking cessation intervention protocol Methods From February 2011 to June 2011,1 237 patients with cardiovascular (n =592),cerebrovascular (n =291) or diabetic (n =354) diseases admitted to the wards of Departments of Cardiology,Neurology or Endocrinology,Beijing Tongren Hospital, were interviewed on the smoking status and their willingness to quit by questionnaires.Smoking cessation intervention was carried out for the 345 patients who were current smokers. They were randomized to a routine intervention group ( n =172) or an intensified intervention group ( n =173).A phone call followup was performed 6 months after discharge. Results Overall 47.0% (582/1 237) of the patients reported smoking, and of whom 345 (27.9%,345/1 237) were current smokers. After smoking cessation interventions, most of the patients changed from the contemplation stage to the action stage. The overall point cessation rate was 30.0% in the 303 patients who received follow up contact at 6 months after discharge, the rate was higher in the intensive intervention group (45.8%) than in the routine intervention group (21.3%,P <0.05).Conclusions The prevalence of smoking was high in hospitalized patients with cardiocerebrovascular or diabetic diseases, but the patients' knowledge on the hazard of smoking was inadequate. An intensive intervention program was effective and feasible in hospitalized patients.
