Trends in mortality in Poland from 1951 to 1979 are described with special reference to changes in the causes of death over time. Differential mortality is examined according to various demographic characteristics including residence. "The article also includes an assessment of the coverage and reliability of the relevant statistical data. Particular attention is given to the following causes of death: cardiovascular diseases cancer violence infectious and parasitic diseases cirrhosis of liver and diabetes mellitus."
