Insecticidal Effect of Allium sativum (Alliaceae) Essential Oil

2013
AbstractEssential oil of garlic, Allium sativum was isolated and evaluated for their repellent, toxicity, oviposition and developmental inhibitory activities against Tribolium castaneum. A. sativum essential oil repelled T. castaneum adults at very low concentration in repellency assay. A. sativum essential oil caused fumigant and contact toxicity in adults and larvae of T. castaneum. T. castaneum reduced oviposition potential of the adults when treated by fumigant method and contact method both. A. sativum essential oil was found to interfere with the developmental processes and reduced transformation of larvae into pupae and adult emergence. A. sativum essential oil exhibited antifeedant activities against T. castaneum in a concentration dependent manner. A. sativum essential oil inhibited acetylcholinesterase enzyme activity in T. castaneum adults. There was no significant difference in responses between the two methods of the treatments. All the toxicological effects of A. sativum essential oil agains...
