FIRE AND LIFE SAFETY IN ROAD TUNNELS FOR 2000 AND BEYOND

Two major road tunnel fires in 1999, in France and Austria, left 51 fatalities and at least 79 injuries. The paper examines the heightened interest in fire protection and life safety in road tunnels. Many of the requirements and discussion contained in NFPA 502, Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways are covered in the paper.
