Study of Strength and Fatigue of Stainless Steel and Titanium Plates

2021
The main purpose of the work was to select an alternative metal biomaterial for the treatment of deformities of the anterior chest wall. For this purpose, a compression test and fatigue tests were carried out on plates made of stainless steel and Grade 4 titanium with chemical composition and mechanical properties compliant with the recommendations of ISO 5832-1 and ISO 5832-2, respectively. During the fatigue tests, the conditions simulating the breathing process were taken into account. Based on the obtained results, it was found that the values of forces during both compression and fatigue tests were greater for the stainless steel plate. However, in this case, as well as in the titanium plates, no plastic deformations were observed, which would affect the change in the properties of the implants during the loading, which is dependent on the type and size of the defect.
