Introduction to the anatomy and physiology of the major aquatic animal species in aquaculture

2021
Abstract Aquaculture has proven a reliable source of animal protein. It is destined to continue to be a significant source of high-value aquatic animal protein food for the growing human global population. This chapter contains descriptions of the normal form and function of the different organ systems of the three main groups of aquatic animal species in aquaculture (fish, crustaceans, and mollusks). The material was generated to provide very comprehensive high-quality information on the main aquaculture groups in a single source that would allow the reader to appreciate better the impact of application and use of drugs in aquaculture. Thus, for each aquaculture animal group, there is a general description of the external and internal gross anatomy and the physiology of organs and systems of the aquatic animal species accompanied by illustrative figures and images. However, no attempt has been made to be all-inclusive.
