US Attitudes and Reactions Towards China’s “Belt and Road” Initiative

There have been a huge variety in attitudes and responses exhibited by the American government both at the federal and state levels, the business community, as well as American academics and scholars. Among them, some suggest that the US get involved in the BRI for specific economic interests. There are, however, disagreements over the economic viability of the proposed projects, and some even hold suspicions of China’s political, security and military motives in implementing the BRI. This range of ambivalent responses from the official to the corporate levels suggests that the BRI will feature in the long term rivalry between Beijing and Washington.
