Shock hugoniot experiments using an electric gun

1982
We have made shock Hugoniot measurements in the 0.19 to 0.36 TPa range using an exploding foil electric gun system. Our measurements agree with publihed data to within our experimental uncertaintis. In our most recent experiments these uncertainties are around ±3% in both shock and material velocity and are close to what we expect from an analysis of error propagation in our experimental arrangement. As presently configured the electric gun system can make measurements in several TPa regime. These experiments were done with the system deliberately slowed down so that we could compare our results with those published by other researchers using other methods. We believe that these results establish that valid and accurate high pressure equation of state research can be effectively conducted with electric gun systems.
