WEST SIDE STORY : THE RISE AND FALL OF MANHATTAN'S HIGH LINE

2002
In Manhattan's West Side there is a heated debate over the fate of the High Line, a once active New York Central freight line elevated above the street. Raised in the 1920s to ease congestion in the West Side, the High Line served freight traffic until the 1960s. Today the Chelsea Property Owners Group views the High Line as a detriment to property values in the area while the Friends of the High Line seek to transform the 1.45 mile viaduct into a community park.
