A hybrid switching mode liquid crystal display device includes first 103 and second 104 substrates and a liquid crystal layer between the first and second substrates. A plurality of first electrodes 119 are formed on the first substrate 103 and apply an in-plane electric field. A plurality of second electrodes 123 are formed on the second substrate 104 and apply perpendicular and inclined electric fields with the first electrodes.
