Oligoacrylates with cyanobiphenyl mesogenic groups

1996
Three oligoacrylates with cyanobiphenyl mesogenic groups were synthesized and fractionated into narrow fractions. The three oligoacrylates differed in the length of spacers (four, five, or six methylene units) in the main chain between the mesogenic groups. Analysis of the properties of the mesophases of the obtained products and examination of the plots of phase transition temperatures versus the degree of polymerization led us to distinguish several molecular mass regions, each of which was associated with a specific product. These regions involve the region in which individual liquid crystals (LC monomers) exist and those corresponding to suboligomers with the degree of polymerization P 100. A molecular model that explains the specified boundaries was suggested.
