Effect of Walterinnesia aegyptia, Cerastes cerastes and Bitis arietans venoms on liver functions of male rats

2001
The effect of Walterinnesia aegyptia, Cerastes cerastes and Bitis arietans venoms (½, 1/5 and 1/10 of LD 5 0 ) on liver function were studied at different time intervals. The blood glucose level elevated significantly inthe rats treated with ½ LD 5 0 of venom of B. arietans, while it lowered significantly in the rats injected with 1/5 and ½ LD 5 0 of W. aegyptia and C. cerastes venoms. Both blood cholesterol and triglycerides concentration decreased in the rats treated with any of the three venoms at doses level of 1/5 and ½ LD 5 0 . Blood alkaline phosphatase activity of the rats treated with 1/5 and ½ LD 5 0 of W. aegyptia and Cerastes cerastes venoms elevated significantly. B. arietans venom had no significant influence on alkaline phosphatase or aspartate amino transferase activities. Both of AST and alanine amino transferase activities elevated significantly in the rats injected with ½ LD 5 0 of the W. aegyptia and C. cerastes venoms. No histological changes were observed in the liver of rats given 1/10 LD 5 0 of the three venoms. Haemorrhage was noticed in all sections of rats injected with ½ and 1/5 LD 5 0 of the tested venoms. Some histological changes were recorded in case of ½ and 1/5 LD 5 0 of the venoms.
