Influence of prior therapy on breast cancer survivors' preferences for adjuvant systemic therapy in hypothetical scenarios

2004
591 Background: Breast cancer survivors' (BCS') preferences for adjuvant systemic therapy (AST) have been evaluated through questionnaires, interviews and decision boards. The objective of this educational needs assessment was to evaluate, via electronic keypad polling, the influence of prior therapy on BCS' preferences for AST in hypothetical scenarios. Methods: BCS, more than one year from initial diagnosis, attended one-day meetings in NY (n=199), FL (n=253) and TX (n=273). 67% of the BCS received prior chemotherapy (C), and 55% received prior tamoxifen (T). A research leader panel reviewed the risks and benefits of common ASTs, and electronic keypad responses were obtained about treatment preferences for hypothetical postmenopausal case scenarios. BCS were asked about the magnitude of survival advantage that would make C worthwhile and about scenarios involving a choice between T or anastrozole (A). Responses were analyzed by whether BCS received prior C or T. Results: BCS' prior therapy correlated wi...
