Study on the Effect of Specific Egg Yolk Immunoglobulin(IgY) Against Prevotella Intermedia to Gingivitis in a Rat Model

Objective: To estimate the effect of specific IgY against Prevotella intermedia(Pi) to gingivitis in rat.Methods: Fifty SD female rats were divided into five groups randomly: blank control group(N group);negative control group P1 group):modeled;positive control group(P2 group):modeled and treated with tinidazole;modeled and flushed by Pi specific IgY solution(P3 group);modeled and smeared by yolk powder containing Pi specific IgY(P4 group).The rats in P1,P2,P3,P4 group were ligatured at neck of inferior teeth,followed by infecting with Pi and fed with high sugar diets.The rats with gingivitis received treatments(flushed or smeared by different drugs) once after Pi infection.Gingival index(GI),plaque index(PI),bleeding on probing(BOP),white blood cell count(WBC) and weight of the rats were measured on 0d,5d,10d and 15d during treatment.Tissue slices of gum from inferior teeth were prepared to observe local tissue inflammation on 15d.Results: Compared with P1 group,GI,PI,BOP and WBC of rats in P2,P3,P4 groups decreased significantly(P0.05) while weight increased significantly(P0.05),and the sections showed lighter local inflammation.Compared with P2 group,rats in P3 and P4 groups showed much lower GI,PI,BOP and WBC(P0.05),much higher weight(P0.05),and much lighter local inflammation.P3 group showed better efficacy than P4 group(P0.05).Conclusion: Both forms of specific IgY are effective on treatment of rat gingivitis caused by Pi,and IgY solution is better than yolk powder.
