Dermoscopy for Non-melanocytic Benign Skin Tumors

Dermoscopy is a cheap and noninvasive diagnostic technique that improves the diagnostic accuracy of skin tumors over clinical examination alone. The diagnostic strategy includes two different levels. In the first level, the lesion under investigation is classified as melanocytic or non-melanocytic. The second level is applied if the lesion is melanocytic and is needed for defining if the lesion is benign, suspect, or malignant. For most of the benign skin tumors, the clinical diagnosis is easy, but in some cases the differential diagnosis with malignant melanoma or other malign skin tumors can be difficult. Dermoscopy can help to identify benign lesions so as to avoid unnecessary excisions or biopsies.
