TREATMENT OF LIVER ABSCESS IN OUR INSTITUTE

1993
This paper describes our experience in a series of 15 patients with liver abscess as seen at the Tokyo Women's Medical College, Daini Hospital in a recent 6-year period. Clinical materials and methods: Clinical materials are 15 patients with liver abscess (including one with amebic liver abscess) with age range of 9 to 78 year (mean 55.5 years). There were 9 men and 6 women. These patients were classified according to clinical presentations, therapies and outcomes. Thirteen of 15 patients underwent percutaneous abscess dranage and two patients were treated conservatively with antibiotics therapy. Results: Predominant symptoms in these patients were fever and upper abdominal pain. Leucocytosis were found in 14 patients. All patients were cured except one who died of sepsis because of insufficiency of the percutaneous liver drainage. Conclusions: In the diagnosis of liver abcess, echography and CT are usefull, while in the treatment of it percutaneous liver drainage is effective, however, the prognosis may be very poor in a case of multiple liver abscess which can not be drainaged sufficiently by this method.
