Design, Synthesis, and Characterization of HybridSandwich Composites for Structural Applications

2011
The present paper highlights an attempt of hybridization on face sheet and its effect on the mechanical properties of the sandwich composites. The hybrid sandwich composites are new class of materials which minimizes the skin–core debonding in and hence resulting sandwich structure will have high strength against the mechanical deformation also cost-effective and economic in construction. The basic mechanical properties of the hybrid sandwich were evaluated and compared with the general sandwich materials. Sandwich structures have extremely high flexural stiffness to weight ratios and widely used in mechanical structures such as airplanes and ships. It is a technique that can be usefully applied to structures requiring low weight, high strength and good dynamic properties. In this paper, the edgewise compression, flat wise compression and flexural behavior of polyurethane foam (PUF) / E-glass/Bamboo/Jute/vinyl ester (VE) sandwich composites were investigated in accordance with ASTM standards. The present work aims at improving significant advantages of natural fibres when used in conjunction with synthetic fibres for designing, synthesizing and characterizing hybrid sandwich composites for structural applications. The test results revealed that the effect of hybridization improves the mechanical properties and limits the delamination defects.
