Anti-microbial Activities of the Extracts from Cichorium intybus L.Roots

2006
The anti-microbial activities of petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and ethanol extracts from Cichorium intybus L.roots to seven pathogenic fungi and three pathogenic bacteria were in vitro measured and the performances of the extracts from Cichorium intybus L.roots in preventing and controlling wheat powdery mildew were investigated through pot experiment. The results showed that ethyl acetate and ethanol extracts presented certain inhibitory effects on the pathogenic fungi and bacteria and ethyl acetate extract performed better.Ethyl acetate extract at 10 g·L~(-1) could significantly inhibit wheat scab, corn northern leaf blight and tobacco brown spot in hypha growth by more than 85%,and wheat root rot, corn northern leaf blight and tobacco brown spot in spore germination by more than 80%;it could form the inhibition zones of 21.01 mm and 17.23 mm to Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively, and prevented and controlled powdery mildew of pot planted wheat by 50.93% and 65.82%,respectively.
